Mailwasher

Mailwasher (found here http://www.mailwasher.net), was a very useful app that I always used when running windows and I have been unable to find an equivalent style of program in Linux.

It enables you to view your emails on the server before you actively download them, showing you an addy, subject line, and a wee portion of the body, which enables you then to dl it or bounce it back and blacklist the sender. Great for avoiding the 'personal enhancement' line of crap that frequently drops into your e-box.

Anyone come across a similar thing for Linux?

Really....?

No-one out there got any ideas on Anti-spam or email filtering appz?

So far I found nothing similar like MailWasher for Linux. The only chance you have is to run it with wine, but this is not very comfortable

Something interesting that I've just come across...

During the last 6 weeks of using Linux, I've been using Ximian as an email client. The last week has been spent using an old windows environment I have kept for emergencies on a 1.2Gb Drive, as I have had monster hassles reconfiguring a modem after a kernel update. Whilst using Windoze, I have checked my mail with mailwasher, and it shows over 250 emails dating back to the beginning of my time using Linux, which, as far as I was concerned, I had already downloaded and disposed of as required.

Does this mean that Ximian leaves the messages on the server rather than downloading them anyway? If it does, then surely just the quickview I have is essentially the same thing as using Mailwasher isn't it.

Mind you, I am quite prepared to be shot down here... I don't claim to know a great deal about how email works :)

Kaine.

My anti spam setup is as follows
RH9
web based email account
evolution 1.4 email client (1.2 works also)
spamassassin 2.60

This works pretty well. You will need to update Spamassassin periodically eg to get rid of all those email attachments from "Microsoft".

Ximian Evolution have a note on their web site on how to call spamassassin as each email is downloaded.

The redhat spamassassin is only 2.44
After failing with the .rpm files I painlessly upgraded to 2.60 by looking on the spamassassin site
and the top level install document. It shows you how to connect to the CSPAN site and this does all the work for you.

V2.5 and above includes Bayesian training to improve filtering.
You need a min of 500 spam and ham messages.
I have not kept my old junk email until now so I have not tried sa-learn yet.

I am an ex-windows user and have spent a lot of time looking for a 'mailwasher' type programme, the nearest I have found is Save My Modem - http://savemymodem.sourceforge.net/ - has anyone found anthing better?

Have you looked at KShowmail? It's not got all the features of Mailwasher (bouncing, blacklists etc) but it allows you to view the header info of mail on the server and delete before downloading to your PC.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks Chris, yes, I've looked at kshowmail, seems to be pretty good, but doesn't, unfortunately, work well in gnome.

I use Kshowmail but it is a kde rather than gnome programme. Looking for a replacement as Kshowmail does not work with suse 10.1
