Mailing to/from local machines

Hi all,
I'm using a compter on the university LAN. IPs are of the range 172.16.[1-22].[2-60]
Is it possible to send/recieve mails from these machines by using sendmail? For example, is it possible to send a mail from jdoe@172.16.19.2 to alice@172.16.22.35?

What steps are to be followed to achieve this? It would be nice even if it works for one particular domain.

regards,
GVK

Sure, it's possible. Assuming your sendmail is set up correctly and there aren't any interfering/abnoxious firewalls or the like between the two subnets. Best way to check would be to telnet to the IP address you're trying to send on, on port 25. If you can connect to each, then send yourself some mail using the CLI to see if it all goes well.
