Maildir thinks it's mbox.. and other issues :)

Hi guys,

I have followed these instructions to set up qmail.. I opted for Maildir, because it seemed like the 'right thing to do' However the test emails I have sent appear to be in one big file under $HOME/Maildir, which seems to be mbox-like to me. I expected a separate file for each message. What could be happening here?

Additionally I have installed qmail-pop3d and it seems to be accepting connections and authenticating just fine, but no emails actually come down to the client.. (I'm using Evolution). I can see all the emails in the $HOME/Maildir file on the mail server, so what do I need to do to allow these to come in?

What is your default delivery set to?

Can you post the output from
cat /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery
ls -l ~/

Notice how that Maildir is a file - not a directory... and it contains all my test emails.. all in the one file, which seems very mbox-like to me :S

Take a closer look at the table here:
http://lifewithqmail.org/lwq.html#start-qmail

If you don't specify a slash at the end of the defautl delivery name it will assume a file desitination and not a directory.

Try:
echo ./Maildir/ > /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery
qmailctl restart

Hi - I have tried both versions - with the slash and without. Neither seems to work. With the slash added, I then sent a mail to myself to see if the Maildir directory would be created. It wasn't. I then created a new maildir under /home/chris/Maildir, chowned it to chris.users and chmod'd it to 666, restarted qmail and tried again. This is the error I get in /var/log/qmail/current:

Code:
@4000000044c54fd2050eb744 info msg 128623: bytes 883 from <chris@spiration.co.uk> qp 17781 uid 51
@4000000044c54fd2052ab73c starting delivery 4: msg 128623 to local christo@hiddendomain.net
@4000000044c54fd2052bebd4 status: local 1/10 remote 0/20
@4000000044c54fd20554306c delivery 4: deferral: Temporary_error_on_maildir_delivery._(#4.3.0)/
@4000000044c54fd205543c24 status: local 0/10 remote 0/20

Anybody have any ideas?

ta
