Mail service

I would like to run a mail service similer to yahoo or hotmail. I am going to use IMP webmail. I would like users to be able to register on their own and I would like it to be the IMAP protocol. How would I do this? What scripts and mail server should I use?

Any help would be appreciated.

There are many ways to do this, but the basis of what you want is something along the lines of:

1. Linux distro (redhat, etc).
2. Mail server (Sendmail, qmail, etc).
3. A webmail product such as OpenWebMail.

I think these will give you a good place to start. Oh, also you'll want a static IP from your ISP.

Now go start investigating...!

I have RH9, Sendmail and Openwebmail. What IMAP mail server should I use so that users can sign up on their own?

Worst case if I cannot find a solution I will just use POP3. Qmail, Vpopmail, Vqsignup.

I don't know about having users sign up on their own, make sure that is what you really want to do. Are you using Maildir format? For imap I use courier-imap. Binc also supports Maildir.

I have written a script for myself which automatically creates users on the server which have no ssh, ftp etc. It is probably not very secure, but the site I use it on barely gets any visitors anymore... I was unable to get the Qmail, Vpopmail, Vqsignup to work.

This is what I ended up using http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=283815
