I am running a Slackware 12 server on a P4, 4 gig memory with 2 60 gig SATA drives and 3 Gig NIC's. I have used Qmail in the past but am setting up a small hosting service for some of my business clients. I like qmail but it has issues with Spam even using Spamassasin and other issues such as everyone has an opinion on how to resolve issues. But the main reason is that there hasn't been an updated release in over 2 years. I know that there is a new person taking over the qmailrocks site but I am unable to wait for a new revision.

I would like to have a secure server where my clients connect over secure pop and secure smtp. I would also like to have a better webmail solution than squirrelmail and if possible synch. with Outlook if possible. I know that there are pay servers out there such as Scalix and Merak but these seem to run slow and are buggy even with full releases with patches.

I may be asking a lot but I know that there has to be a solution, or if Qmail is it with some enhancements then that is the road I take. I am really looking for advice on mail server and options. I am not stuck on Slackware, I can use Fedora, Debian, or Ubuntu, what ever needs to be done.

When I first hit post thread I got a 400 Error, so i backed up and hit submit again and it went. Delete it out if you want.

if you are an experienced administrator, use sendmail, else qmail

There is an outlook version for squirrelmail available in case you are interested.

I might have one solution for you, although it involves Qmail. I have just finished a live dvd email server called kirramail. It does use squirrelmail, spamassassin, clamav and a few other additions, being a live disc is already setup and running with a test domain to start using straight away. You can always add your own domain and use the administration software that is included to help you maintain your domains.

Check out my website and see if this could be helpful too you, the only thing that might be a problem is that i'm running on a home adsl connection that is rather slow. If have your own server I could upload the iso to it for you.

As for what mail server to use..

I was a huge proponent of QMail and used it for many years (1998-2003). The problem is Qmail never gets updated with the nice new features so you end up having to do a ton of patching to get it to work the way you want. It is great software, don't get me wrong, I just got sick of maintaining it.

Every since I've been a happy Postfix user. I still use maildir's (a must in my mind) and I use Postfix with Spamassasin, virus checking, and several other plugins to do fun things. Again, all of this stuff is also available for qmail, but I found it much harder to get setup (maybe somebody has improved this since?).
