Mail server.

Can I set up a mail server on my machine and then people could e-mail me at whatever@myip ? Or how would I go about setting like that up so people could send e-mails straight to my computer?

Thanks in advance.

You'll need to get a domain name to make things easier. You'll also need to setup MX records, DNS, and it makes it easier if you have a static IP. Then you'll need to setup and choose what MTA you'd like to use like Sendmail, qmail and so on..

Then you'd most likely want to make it easy and setup either IMAP or POP so you can retrieve your mail from the server, even if its local, so you can view it in a fully featured email client like Evolution or any other you like to use.

Cheers

dyndns.org

You may run into problems receiving mail, because many ISPs now block incoming port 25.

An alternative is www.dyndns.org . They have a service called Mailhop Relay, where they redirect your incoming mail to a port that your ISP doesn't block.

It costs money, but it's still cheaper than a business class dsl connection.
