mail archiving methods

I store all of my mail on a remote IMAP server, which suits me because I need access to my folders from various places. I would like to keep a local backup of all mail on that server because my email provider don't keep any backups.

Does anybody have any advice on how to do this? I have a hell of a lot of mail on the IMAP server, so it would be extremely useful if I could sync the local archive periodically and just update it, instead of downloading everything periodically.

I don't mind which format the archived mail would take, but mbox would be great.

Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks for your help.

I think most email clients support creating an archive of their own...

I'd have to agree. Depending on the email client your using, archiving will actually store the emails locally.

I know that evolution can do that for an IMAP box on my machine. I understand Thunderbird will as well -- so I presume most email clients have some sort of functionality.
