Magic sysrq key + Framebuffer console

I am using RedHat 8.0 with a custom kernel v 2.4.14.

When X locks up, I use the sysrq key to kill it (alt+sysrq+k). X restarts OK, but it screws up my framebuffer console. I can fix it by rebooting (a la Windoze), but is there any way to just reinitialize the framebuffer console?
