Problem with flash in any browser
 

ok, i use mozilla, and ive had a problem with flash for a while, now. Im using the latest player, and all flash is choppy, the audio and video fall out of synch quickly on any flash enabled site, for example, homestarrunner.com

I need to know if anyone has either found a solution to this issue, or knows of a better player. my system specs are

100Gig HDD
1.5Gig DDR2700 RAM
Radeon9700 Pro 128M
aDSL connection

back in windoze, i had no problem with this (although i had horrible problems with virtually everything else), so theres no way im ever going back to Gates' world again, and this is the one thing keeping me from having a perfectly functioning system. any advice? Ive also installed linux on several different machines, red hat, slack9 (what i use at home), mandrake, and have the same issues on those as well, although a good friend of mine has slack 9, and doesnt have any problem with flash at all, and cant explain it. Ive tried it in the latest mozilla browser (1.6) and in Firebird, and i still cant get decent flash. ive been to a few test sites, and i run fine when there isnt a lot going on and no sound, but when i hit a normal flash site, the audio and video go out of synch, and the video is choppy. My vid card is running the most recent drivers and is properly configured, as have all the others. also, is it possible to install flash in Konqueror? from what ive gathered, it isnt, but its very possible i simply dont know what im talking about :P

Just for comparison my system: 2.8G P4, 512M RAM, GeForce FX5200 Slackware 9.1 --> no problem with Flash, homestarrunner works fine.

Konqueror will/can use any plugin you have. Go to the configuration tab and then to "plugins". There is a dialog box about where the plugins are and where should Konqueror search. Just make sure your plugin location is there, click the "search for new plugins" button and they should be found and used.

Sorry I can't help much...just wanted to let you know you're not alone in this. It's my opinion that Macromedia support for Linux is poor at best. They say Player7 (which has been available for win/mac for several months) improves runtime performance, so maybe if they release a 7 for Linux we could eventually have a pleasant Flash experience.

It would be helpful (for me anyway) to know what your processor speed is. Flash performance is almost entirely dependent upon that, and the Flash player is notoriously CPU hungry. I've got a 1.8ghz P4 and Flash is the only area where I get poor results.

Also, have some problems: I can see animations but no sound.

Same problem. In fact, I noticed it on homestarrunner when strong bad kicked homestar and homestar's crying was out of sync with his animation.

I think there's a plugin patch on their site, but its poorly documented, and I don't know enough about building/compiling to install it.

Can anyone help?

Nope, the stupid mofo cow-lickers only have v6 for Linux. I checked their site. We should start a petition, like the one for Shockwave

which version of Flashplayer are you using? Version 7is available, but if that's what you're already using, then... well... you know.

by default, this player wants to install for mozilla to /home/username/.mozilla/plugins

i just went ahead and installed their and told Konqueror to look there for plugins too.. Much easier that trying to install to Konqeuror.

I'm using version 7 on Slackware 10 - still no sound. :-(

Thanks mykrob, I'm now running flash 7 in Konqueror.
However, I STILL have the stupid audio delay. So I guess the problem isn't the version. Are there any settings you tinker with beyond the settings panel you can access with a right click?

not to my knowledge..Plus, the right click menu can be disabled when you create flash movies. Certain options can be disabled, or the entire menu. The only options you'll have much control over is quality, and microphone/webcam access.

I checked mine over trying to watch a film at http://www.jibjab.com, and noticed the audio is out of sync. It does it in Konqueror, but it also does it in Mozilla. Seems to be a palyer issue, not a browser issue. perhaps Macromedia didn't port it properly?
Dont know what to do at this point..

I compared homestar on my Linux and my dad's Windows. The graphics are significantly slower than the audio. It started out fairly in sync, but by the end of a three minute clip, they were at least a second apart.
