Which form of linux is the best for the macbook pro? I know someone who uses ubuntu, which is command based. Is there any other form of linux that is best suited for the mac?
Command based? Ubuntu is one of the most GUI-centric distributions available. If there is too much command line usage in Ubuntu for you, then you are just not going to find a distribution that suits you.
can the programs I download from the internet be installed onto ubuntu just like the mac os x program does it or do I have to do it manually from the terminal? In other words can the mac os x programs work on ubuntu? More specifically can final cut pro work on ubuntu?

Rep:
Ubuntu can install software using graphic tools or the command line
Final cut pro will NOT run on linux. It may be possible to get it to work using VMware, but its performance would probally not be sufficant in a virtual machine to actually get much work done.
That being said, there are probally products for linux that can do what you need, or possibly windows programs that would run well enough in crossover office to be useful.
As much as I love Linux and the open source initiative, I must be realistic and admit there is absolutely nothing in the way of high-quality video editing software for Linux. This is one category the Linux software library has always been down in, and that unfortunately doesn't look to be changing anytime soon.
There are a handful of Linux applications for editing videos, certainly, but none of them are even remotely as capable as the closed source editors out there.
Also how do I set up my root account for the mac os x program? Someone suggested sudo, but that seems like it is used for ubuntu more often. I know I should set it up in the beginning of the setup but there is no indication on the mac set up that tells me I can create a root passwd and account. Also does anyone know how the mac works? How they divide up the partitions in the harddrive? And is it possible for me to divide the partitions up after I have created an account? Also how does filevault work? Is mac os x still a part of the unix family or is it something else?
