Sometimes I download music files in the M4A format.I always convert them to mp3.What I use to do this is an application called Perl Audio Converter or Pacpl. This takes the format that you have and changes it into the format that you want. http://pacpl.sourceforge.net/ Follow the instructions eg the INSTALL file. This file tells you how to do it.There are dependencies to be met for this app.Make sure you have ffmpeg installed and all the perl modules that the INSTALL file mentions.I dont think that there are ubuntu packages so you should get the tar.gz source package.run mod-install.sh in the /extra folder of pacpl. This install all the deps that you need. Then install the pacpl package itself.Usage is simple.Open a terminal in the folder that contains the M4A files and do pacpl -t mp3 *.m4a
