Unhappy LVM, Slackware 8.1, Adaptec 3940UW, IBM harddrives

I'm trying to get a set of IBM SCSI-3 HDs (type is DHCS) in an external case connected to an Adaptec 3940UW to act as an LVM set under Slackware 8.1 (kernel 2.4.17). Everything works until I try to format them as ext3 and a strip set, or write to one as a stand alone LVM partition and then sync. The system doesn't lock up, but anything that requires access to the SCSI bus does.

Other than the man pages are there any good docs that describe in detail what steps to take to ensure that the hardware and software are configured correctly before creating the LVN set, or is there a bug in the LVM code with kernel 2.4.17?

<sigh> It looked so simple when I started.

Have you looked at the LVM-HOWTO?

Thumbs down

I think the problem is in the adaptec driver for the kernel (2.4.17) that I am using.

Does anyone know of any problems with the adaptec drivers?

That card isn't U320 I think(?) If not, I'd think it would be adequately supported in 2.4.17 You might try perusing the Adaptec Open Source site at
