Question LVM PE size-is it important?

Then I install Linux with LVM, PE size on my LVM is 4 MB. I read in man page of vgcreate that

having a large number of extents will slow down the tools but have no impact on I/O performance to the logical volume.

How is it critical? May be better to create LV with PE of 64 MB?

I'm curious about this as well. According to multiple sources the maximum size of a volume group is 256GB (I assume on a 32-bit kernel).

However, I have a 5.1 TB volume group which has a PE Size of 4.00 MB and a VG Size of 5.10 TB on a RedHat 64-bit kernel. So this no longer appears to be the case or perhaps I'm misunderstanding what I read. Originally the volume was a 2TB array and I dynamically extended it to 5.1TB.
