ls|less

I think I am missing something here. I have Slackware 10 installed, and I just upgraded to the 2.6.10 kernel from 2.4.26

I re-configured everything, (sound, ndiswrapper etc.) and everything seems to be working fine.

I was in BASH and I typed man alsamixer

I got this when root:

Error executing formatting or display command.
System command /bin/bzip2 -c -d /usr/man/cat1/alsamixer.1.bz2 | /usr/bin/less -is exited with status 256.

and when I am a regular user:

Error executing formatting or display command.
System command (cd /usr/man && (echo ".pl 1100i"; /bin/gunzip -c '/usr/man/man1/alsamixer.1.gz'; echo ".\\\""; echo ".pl \n(nlu+10") | /usr/bin/gtbl | /usr/bin/nroff -S -mandoc | /usr/bin/less -is) exited with status 256.
No manual entry for alsamixer

Now, there IS a man page for alsamixer. I checked bzip2, it works.

less does not work. I tried ls|less and I just got another BASH prompt
(*@*[<directory>]:_)

I used Swaret, and I upgraded less; still nothing. I uninstall and then reinstalled, still nothing. I can not get less to work again. v.v

Any help?

ok great I fixed it by changing tty/%n or whatever to pty. It works now, but right after that, all of a sudden when I am logged in as my unprivelage user (my default one) and I try to load a shell (BASH or gnome-terminal etc.) I get :Error: Cannot start child process.

Any suggestions?
