lppasswd with cups can't set password

I recently Installed SuSE 11.0 and could also print, all was well.

Of a sudden printing is out, jobs are listed as completed but never a page done.

I wanted to enter the cups settings at http://localhost:631 but it refused my password. So I issued
Code:

lppasswd -g sys -a root
typed in the old/new password twice and got "passwords don't match". I made sure they do but still the same error.

Next I tried
Code:

lppasswd -x root
and got "unable to open password file: Permission denied."
I set the passwordfile to "rwxrwxrwx", set sticky, guid, suid bits ... nothing. I renamed the password file, no luck. I reinstalled cups, no luck.

I don't know what to do ... I'd hate to re-install the whole system ... but what the * ('scuse me) is happening here?
