I left my machine running for an hour and came back to hear it clicking loudly about 4 times a second. One of the windows was waiting for a prompt. I gave it what it wanted but the clicking did not stop. I terminated all applications and ended the session, but the clicking continued. The only way I could stop it was to reboot. After the reboot, the clicking didn't come back (at least not yet).
I'm running OpenSuSE 11.1, and the process that was waiting for a prompt was VirtualBox.

What might be going on?
Without hearing it I can't be sure, but that would be highly indicative of impending hard disk failure in most cases, it's known as the click of death (if it wasn't coming from speakers.)
If it was coming from speakers it could have just been a sound related issue of some sort... but get good backups asap just in case.
The sound was definitely coming from the speakers. In fact, I responded to the prompt and the sound changed somewhat to more of a chirp but at the same frequency. Especially since the sound stopped before the shutdown process was complete, I'm inclined not to think that the HD is failing.
If it is indeed a sound issue, and if it recurs, how might I track it down when I hear it again?
