Lots of missing (corrupted?) files in Fedora Core 4 install...

After completing a fairly typical Fedora Core 4 installation, I have noticed that MANY things are "missing". For starters, I have no screensavers. I open the X-Screensaver config and there's nothing, the list is empty. Secondly, C++ seems to be completely absent.

Here's a print of an attempt to install Tux Racer:

[root@****** tuxracer-0.61]# ./configure
creating cache ./config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for working aclocal... missing
checking for working autoconf... missing
checking for working automake... missing
checking for working autoheader... missing
checking for working makeinfo... missing
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... yes
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) is a cross-compiler... no
checking whether we are using GNU C... yes
checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes
checking for c++... no
checking for g++... no
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C++ compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables.

I really like FC4, but I'm starting to wonder what's going on...

Thanks in adavnce.

Also, I can't install mPlayer, getting the error that "a required package coud not be found", further investigation led me to find that this package is libmp3lame.so. Is this something I should have to download? This is very odd, I can't install anything I download, and some of my regular applications (like Totem Movie Player) refuse to run.
