lost my xdisplay ubuntu karmic 9.0.1

I was trying to install some packages yesterday with apt-get install and it asked to remove some packages and i allowed those packages to be removed and i lost my xdisplay now.

I can still ssh into this machine.

What can i do from command line to get the xdisplay working?

sorry, i am running 9.1, not 9.0.1

I found some log files in /var/log/dpkg* and reading them to understand what i removed yesterday.

I am trying to load back the x-window-manager metacity using the command "apt-get install metacity"
