Lossless DVD Ripping?
I'm sorta new to the art of DVD-ripping and I was curious to hear any suggestions on the best codecs / methods to use when ripping / encoding / burning. I'm not concerned with diskspace really. What I want is the least "lossy" method as possible.
Right now i'm using the dandy program Acidrip using the "copy" settings. I'd like to be able to preserve the resolution and fps of the DVD video and also the 5.1 sound with full resolution. Any suggestions? |
Update :
I ripped an entire movie and have run it under MPlayer and it looks and sounds identical to the .vobs on the DVD. I even have 5.1 intact... which is surprising considering MPlayer doesnt remark about it Quote:

you blindly copied both the audio and video stream, there is no way it wouldn't contain 5.1 sound if the original did.
there's very little point in using acidrip for this functionality. you are not seeking "lossless encoding" you are just straight copying it verbatim, no encoding anywhere. you might prefer to look at tools like vobcopy which will decode vobs without changing them into other file formats. |
Thanks for the response.
How could I have "blindlycopied" it if the original was a disc with 6+ gigs of vob. files and my "copy" was a single .avi of 5.3gigs? The process of encoding vob files from 720x480 30fps .avi or .mpg files take a good while and is obviously not just copying. Why would the other way around be any different? I tried vobcopy and the vobs ended up being unusuable... no video... choppy audio. I thought perhaps it was some sort of copy protection. But make no mistake, I really am seeking "lossless" video. I want to copy, encode, and/or transfer verbatim DVD video to a useable format and not lose any audio or video quality. Btw, if there is no point in using acidrip for that functionality, why did you put it in there? ;) |
