Im refurbishing an old computer for my father. I plan on using Fedora 23 workstation 64bit xfce spin.
He has been using Windows 8.1 for very simple tasks like email, bill pay, youtube, and reading the news. Hes been having problems with adware, junkware, malware, having to reinstall every 6 months, etc... So I talked him into giving Linux a shot.
Im looking for an app similar to the fullscreen Bing news or New York Times he is used to. He got these apps from the Windows Store.
He insists on having a separate fullscreen app for the large fonts and pictures rather than just going to the website.
Maybe a nice RSS aggregator? KDE's Akregator works nicely. It's not my favorite, because I prefer RSS aggregators that are integrated directly into the browser (that's one reason I use Seamonkey). It has its quirks, but it is a nice piece of work.
I would choose something other then Fedora for this simple because of the short life cycles unless they went to a rolling release (highly suspect they haven't). Fedora becomes out dated very quickly.
As a side note have your father stop using the ADMIN Account on windows and his problem with installing new every 6 months goes away.
