Looking for 2.6.8.1-12mdk.rpm
Anyone know where I can get the Mandrake 10.1 rpm "kernel-source-2.6.8.1-12mdk"? Mandrakes site has an updated one (kernel-source-2.6.8.1-24mdk) that doesn't work with my vpn client, probably due to the mismatch of the kernel & kernel source, or so I have read. I have searched to no avail. When I urpmi the kernel source and install the available 24mdk I get an error stating something like the vpn sub-system could not be found when I try to run the client. Someone stated that it was the order the vpn client service is started, so I tried to reorder but it didn't matter. I had this working perfect but since a re-install (tried slackware) I can't get it to work anymore. I am pretty sure this is the issue. Any help is appreciated!

It's available via Mandrakeclub.com... Otherwise, I'm sorry to say I couldn't locate another source via Google. Mandrakeclub has both the source and the ready-to-go RPM's.

bummer
Unfortunately I need it to connect to work, which requires me to go back to XP if I can't get it. I would join the club but I am still in the decision making process (suse vs mandrake) and I am not ready to pay the money yet. I want to see what suse 9.3, due out in april, has to offer.
I may have downloaded it at work. I'll have to check.

It's also on Disc One of my installation discs for Mdk 10.1 OE which I bought by mail a couple of weeks after the official release. So it might be on your set or those of somebody you could borrow from.

Another option?
What if I were to update my kernel and kernel source so they match? In other words if they were both at 2.6.8.1-24? My main concern is that I don't break the OS, not so much that I don't get the vpn working. Is it ok to update my kernel & source?

Isn't the kernel source just used to compile the kernel? I wouldn't think it would make any difference what sources you have available--it's only the compiled, operating kernel that makes any difference. And you can have any number of those--after installing a new one, if you're using lilo for booting, you run lilo -v and the new kernel will appear in the list you can choose from at boot time and be available for use. If it doesn't work, or something is not as good as with another kernel, you can just reboot and choose the one that works.
Is it possible you're missing a module that would make vpn work? If vpn support isn't compiled into the kernel you presently have, is there a module that could be inserted instead?
Beyond that tentative suggestion, I don't know what to suggest--it's beyond my level. Sorry....

jonr to layman translation: you don't have the rpm but even after upgrading to 24mdk the old kernel should still be in /boot directory. Some other things likely need the kernel source too, but if you always plan on installing using RPMs it isn't strictly required (and not installing saves quite a bit of disk space.) Then again, you could probably recompile your VPN service with the 24mdk kernel source and get it working again. Just a matter of how down-and-dirty you wanna get with it, I suppose.

problem solved
Updating the kernels did it, although I think now I have to change the order of the services so vpn starts before the network. rdesktop locked up on me though, when I tried to open outlook on my work pc. I think I want to get that older kernel anyway, just in case. Thanks for the help.
