Long delays in KDE 3.2

I'm haviing multiple problems with KDE 3.2 and was wondering if anyone else is having these issues. I run Debian unstable, with XFree 4.3 and KDE 3.2.

If I switch from one desktop to another, then click on the "K" button to bring up the menu, my system stops responding for about 3 minutes. If during that time, I click elsewhere, once the freeze up stops, all the clicks are responded to.

Running Mozilla Firebird, if I try to type something in it for the first time, whether it's a website url or a login, as soon as I try to type, I get the same freeze, but after 2-3 minutes, it responds and shows all my keystrokes.

Kmail, if I try to compose a message, clicking in the TO: field, either directly or on the address book link, causes this freeze up as well of 2-3 minutes. Same issues with running control center modules.

This system started as a Knoppix 3.2, which I've upgraded and run a custom kernel for. And I did not have these freezeups before KDE 3.2.

I can't find any messages of note in the logs.

Any ideas?

Barbara
Thanks!

"Any ideas?"

One thing that you could do is use the top command to see whether you have some rogue software occasionally hogging enough resources to block all other programs for a while.

See:
man top

Sorry, I should have mentioned that. I have had top running before trying these things. Everything looks fine, nothing maxed out.

I've checked all the logs I can think of, nothing sticks out at me.

i got that too but they went away either after a reinstall of mandrake (9.2) or after i installed the new Nvidia drivers for my video card.

i also got that in 10.0 when i was experimenting with that earlier today.
if you have time to kill you could try installing again...pain in the rear tho if you just want to use the machine.
