Try this while in X.
Open up a terminal, su to root or login as root to begin with and run this command:
telinit 3
This will kill X and restart your machine in runlevel 3, you may have to type ctrl-d to get a login prompt. Then from the command line after logging in, do a startx to start X.
From there and once in X, do a logout and see if it hangs. If it does, its some issue with X.. if it doesn't and takes you back to the console or command line, it's most likely a problem with the GDM/KDM/XDM graphical login manager your using that might be the issue.
hai kid

Only suggestion I'd say trying is find out which one your using and perhaps change to one of the others, or try to upgrade if there are updated packages available.

Hi, I just installed FC3 and had the freeze-up problem when exiting Gnome. I did Ctrl-Alt-F3 and went into a virtual terminal, logged in as root and was about to ps -ef to see if I could kill the process when suddenly I was returned to the X virtual terminal and logout had completed (sent me to the GDM greeter). I then went back to virtual terminal 3 to logout and it was still logged in. I thought it was strange as that was the first time I was unilaterally removed from a virtual terminal. I could see the freeze ending and the logout completing, but why was I sent from virtual terminal 3 back to virtual terminal 7 automagically?
