Ooooo, I was so close!!! I used KUser to create a new account and also do the group stuff, and when i logged on using that account it worked!!! Gnome loaded up with all the right icons displayed and there wa no waiting around for anything. It worked perfectly!!!!
I logged off (as you do) and logged back in...<sigh> i was back to no icons and waiting for ages.
