Wait wait, so what you are saying is that you log in as root all the time, and with the caps lock on? Or what do you mean? You are not clearly explaining your problem.

You know you shouldn't log in as root, right? Or do you mean you still logon as your normal user, and login as ROOT when you use su?

Edit: Check paulsm4's explanation below. Then come back here if it doesn't explain your problem.
BTW, I can't reproduce your problem, as described so far, on MEPIS 8.0.

  1. What are you logging into:
    1. A desktop environment (DE), like KDE or Gnome?
    2. A console or Xterm inside a DE?
    3. A "real" terminal, found at Ctrl-Alt-F1 through Ctrl-Alt-F6?
    4. Other?
    5. You don't understand my question.
  2. How are you determining that you are logging in as "ROOT", rather than "root"?
  3. After log in, is your user name displayed as "ROOT", rather than "root"?
  4. Is there any chance you have 2 root user accts., "root" & "ROOT"? If so, please run:
    Code:
    grep ':0' /etc/passwd | less
& put the result in a "Code" block.

That's actually a feature. Back in the Olden Days (Unix), single-case only keyboards were still common. If you logged in with upper case, the system assumed you didn't *have* any lower case keys, and set the terminal (tty) accordingly.

Quote:
http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq7.html

Virtually all Unix commands and user names are entered using all lowercase. However, some very old terminals were only capable of uppercase characters, making them difficult, if not impossible, to use with Unix. As a workaround, if you entered your user name in all uppercase, getty(8) would assume your terminal was "lowercase challenged", and simply interpret everything you type as lowercase, while echoing it as uppercase. If you have a mixed-case or uppercase password, this will make login impossible.

Hitting CTRL-D at the login prompt will cause getty(8) to terminate, and init(8) will relaunch a new one, which will accept uppercase and lowercase properly.
PS:
Please turn off your caps lock. And stop logging in as "root" unless you absolutely have to. OK?
