Login/Su Problems (Embedded Platform)

I've got a problem logging in as anything other than the root user on an embedded platform that uses busybox. I've created a new user with entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/group and given the user a home directory (owned by him):

Code:
# In /etc/passwd:
default::1000:1000:Trip2 User:/home/default:/bin/bash

# In /etc/group:
default:*:1000:
Whenever I try to login, either as the root user running "su" or via telnetd (which is running /bin/login), I never get to the bash prompt - su just says "Killed" and telnetd prints /etc/motd and then just bails.

su leaves the message "auth.notice su: + /dev/ttyAMA0 root:default" in my logs but nothing else, and telnetd doesn't leave anything.

What am I missing here?

On my box, man 5 passwd says that:

Code:
...with the password field blank, no password is required to authenticate.
However, some applications which read the /etc/passwd file may decide not to permit
any access at all if the password field is blank.
Have you tried setting a password for the user?

Yes, but that didn't help.

I've found the problem - the kernel shipped with the embedded platform had CONFIG_DEFAULT_MMAP_MIN_ADDR=65536 (I think) as opposed to 4096 that it was supposed to.

Would have been nice if the kernel had printk()'d something to let me know what the problem was though...
