But I can't login to the system. My friend told me to format the PC, reinstall all thing and start again. Is that the only way?

Hi all,

I have the same problem, but with SuSE 9. I can't seem to figure out how to reactivate an expired account in YaST, although I'm not sure why this non-root account is disabled (especially since the "Disable account login" setting is unchecked).

It would be pretty bad if one had to reinstall Linux simply because of a lost password. No, there are ways to set a new password or to change old ones but in this case they involve using the command line. I am not quite familiar with the RH procedure but I assume you would:
- start in single mode (=add "single" to your grub / lilo boot line)
- from the command line, issue the passwd command, which will set a new root password

Once you get that far, you can log in as root to set/change user passwords. Alternatively, you can set/change user password on the command line with adduser (or userradd) and passwd.

Well as far as I can tell the account that I normally login/SSH as has expired (I can still login and SSH as root). I can change the accounts password with YaST, but regardless of what I set it to when I try to SSH as that user it says the user expired. Interestingly enough, when I'm logged in as root in shell, I can't run passwd to change that user's password; it says the account has expired (a message I do not get from YaST). Again, TYIA for the help.
