Login big trouble

Hi all,

I have problem logging in into my system. Actually I can't login at all.
When I try to write 'root' at prompt I just see strange signs like when I press r i see ]]]]] on the srceen. When I press o I just see ww and so on. It's impossible to write root.

Well, I tried to login from another machine via ssh but I couldn't cause there was no connection with my computer. I can't even ping it.

I can run and login in single user mode but I can't run ftp or connect to the Internet and what I want to do is to backup my important data from the hard-disk.

Computer worked before I installed the following packages:

ffmpeg
httpd-2.0.52
libcdio
qt-embedded-opencource-4.00-b1
toolame-02m-beta8
vcdimager
vlc-0.8.1 -- Media player
wxWidgets
zlib-1.1.4

When I install packages I always use to put the source into /usr/local library and compile it from there.

My OS: Linux Slackware 10.0

Anyone who knows what could be wrong?

I solved the "big problem".

I had deactivated rc.hotplug during boot time before so I activated again and I could write as usual and login.
I don't really understand what plugin has to do with my keyboard. I mean I use normal PS/2 keyboard and not usb.
There's still a problem when I activate gpm though. It's not working properly. When I move mouse in console it writes wired stuffs on the screen.
