Logging out of X Windows

I am using GNOME as a GUI with Redhat 9. I am trying to install nVidia drivers for my GeForce 2 MX so I can play various 3D games and stuff. Every time I run the install program, it says that I am in an X server or something and that I need to logout and run it from a command line. My problem is that I can't seem to get out of X! I have tried logging out, but then I just get a graphical login screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're running at init 5 (GUI) you can try: 'telinit 3' to get to runlevel 3 (No X)
Or edit /etc/inittab to show the default runlevel as 3 and reboot. I don't have RedHat anymore, so that's from memory. Try: 'man telinit'

it's just 'init' and you have to do it as root

# init 3
