Logging in as Root always freezez

Im having some difficulty lately,

I have 2 pc's, a p4 2.4 and athlon 2G

Tried installing Mandriva 2006 and Suse 10.2 and I have the same problem, usually the initial logins as root are fine but after maybee 4 restarts when trying to login as root it really freezes up and only allows me to log as a regular user I created.

Also when running apps maybee takes 3 minutes to open Open office and other apps.

am I doing something wrong?

Any clues from the systems' logs?
