loggin problems

Hi, about a week ago, my server stopped logging to the /var/log/messages file, as well as maillog and secure. If I look at the rotated logs, eg. /var/log/messages.1 there are log entries, however they are from a week ago.

The files are there, however they are empty.

I'm thinking the box was compromised, but that is not likey since it is running iptables, rejecting everything except ssh on a non standard port.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

does the syslogd runs? actually logging stuff is send to the syslogd daemon wich writes the files. It's possible your /etc/syslog.conf configuration file is corrupted, wich tells the daemon what to log and to wich files, tho I don't know exactly the right syntax for that file

Hmm, you are correct. Syslog daemon was not running. Not really sure why, when the system was initially loaded, it was running fine. Some how it got turned down.

Thanks for your help I appreciate it greatly.
