Log in problem on PCLinuxOS 2007

Hello

I must start stating that I'm a noob in Linux. I have been able the solve the little problems here and there but this last one really is taking the best of me.
I have a home build PC clone. AMD XP2000 processor, 1GB RAM, 3 HD and right now is set up as dual boot between WIN XP and PCLinuxOS 2007. The Problem I'm running into lately is that after I log in the machine seems to stall for a wile and the it ask me again to log in for a second time. This takes a wile. It seems that I'm in a session inside a session. When I'm going to shut down only option available now is a button that says "end session" and after ending the session I'm able to shut down with the panel.

Here it is. I tried to explained the best I could. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes I can log as any of the previously defined users. It's just that is really annoying to have to log twice. Not to mention that between the first logging prompt and the second the machine takes a wile doing something. It takes about minute and a halve.

are you saying that it asks you to log into the GUI twice??

Typically, a terminal-type login will appear for a few seconds before X-Windows starts. Don't try to log-in here--wait for the graphical login menu.

You can look at the X-windows log here: /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Look for warnings (WW) or errors (EE)

It is in the GUI that it ask for login. Thats the reason that I think that for some reason its starting a session inside a session. Before this problem started when I was going to log out I had the options for shut down, restart or end session. Now the only option available is end session. After I have ended the session on the login I have a little terminal icon that when selected provides a menu that has the shut down on it.

I'm going to check the log file tonight. If I can't find what is wrong I will try to post it later on.

You get similar behavior with X when you type 'startx' from the terminal.

Here are a few suggestions to find your problem. This list is not all inclusive, there could be other possibilities:

1. You are booting into the default (standard) Linux Kernel.
2. Check the settings in GRUB to make sure that there are no duplications.
3. Check the init.d scripts. I am not really sure what you will find, but these scripts load the runlevels.

I am not sure where else to check, because I have not run across this x behavior before.

Good Luck.

I'm not sure I completely understand. Nor know the how to. But for sure I will research more on your suggestions.
Thanks very much for your reply.
