log file size limit 2.1gb


As I know the log file size limit in RedHat Linux is 2.1 gb .can I increase this to any other higher or lower value.

I think you'll find that limit is a limitation of the ext file system IIRC, so the only was to increase it would be to format the partition with another File System like JFS or XFS

The 2 GB file size limitation was for older kernels without Large File Support (LFS). It should not be a problem with the latest 2.4 or any 2.6 kernel. It would be nice to know what Redhat distribution you are running. BTW you can limit the size of the logs in the /etc/logrotate.conf file.

I believe the first RH version to include LFS was Redhat 8. There could of been applications that were not recompiled to include LFS. Which in this case there still would be a 2 GB limitation.

RH7.2 had it or got it as well.... I still have a old RH7.2 system running and it does support files over 2.1GB.
