Post loading Mandrake 9.1

I just bought a Toshiba satellite 2435-s255 which has XP on it. I have partitioned the hard drive with partition magic and am trying to load mandrake 9.1 on a partition, but the machine does not seem to be able to unload the kernel. I have tried all the options on the load and finally thiught I was making progress when I switched to the alt1 mode. But I got a message saying " We now use kernel pcmcia support and this won't work with a 2.2 kernel." I went on past the message and it seemed to load. Afterwards , I get the boot from Linux but the machine locks up when I try to run Linux. It gets to the message decompressing the kernel and then locks up. Any help would be greatly appreciated
