LM 17.3 xfce constant lagging
 

First, let me make this clear: I'm running 17.3 LIVE! OK, ...I used to run 17.3 live with next to no problems. Then got the bright idea to 'upgrade" to 18.3x and there's where it all started. After trying 18.3x, I tried 5 other distros with similar results.(Linux Lite being the worst) After awhile of searching I found this: sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf vm.swappiness = 15. All it did was set in the terminal/never executed. I read that Knoppix was 'built" for live application, however, had problems converting it to "bootable" pendrive. So, I need to alleviate all the lagging, could someone enlighten me?

It's been my experience with Live distro's that the lagging dissapears when a fresh installation is performed.

When you run Linux Live there are some things that don't always perform as well or don't function at all (certain commands) as with a fresh install.

Is this a desktop or a laptop? UEFI?
Do you suspect that the lagging could be hardware related? GPU? CPU?

All distributions have certain pc requirements.

Mint requires:
1 GB of RAM
15GB of disk space (20GB recommended)

The way in which you are trying to convert the .iso image is the key.

If you are using a Windows machine I suggest using Rufus.

Try Devuan live Xfce or if you want the quickest live AntiX linux.

Live systems suck a lot of memory, too, because the entire system has to load into memory.

It depends.

If you don't choose option "toram" at boot time only the base system is loaded in memory all the rest, when needed, is picked-up by cd or usb.

And it depends on which distro you want run.

Try to run live distro like AntiX Linux or Puppy linux or Absolute Linux.

Obviously bloted distros like Mint or Ubuntu in live are crappy cause the amount of memory required also to work as installed system.

Thanx for responding and for the info. AntiX is something I'm not familiar with, but will check it out. Yes, of course, everyone wants a 'quick" O.S., but that's not, necessarily, my biggest concern. I'm running "live" and just want a distro that runs smoothly. As with running 'live", I expect some slowness, but not the lagging/freezing that's occurring. I've moved to LM18.3x and it's much better, but yet, still plagued by occasional lags. Tried this: apt-cdrm...however, I think there is more to be added to that command and I'm not sure what the rest would be.
Tried to use puppy linux and had trouble with 'bootable" program (pendrivelinux) extracting the puppy iso. I wanted. (same with Knoppix). Ztcoracat suggested using Rufus and it's probable I will should I need to create another "live" distro. And didn't understand why LinuxLite was the 'worst" among the distros for lagging(?)
I have good, solid reasons for needing to run "live". We need not discuss those...as some have insisted. I'd been running "live" for over 2 years, without incident, then got the bright idea of "upgrading". That's when/where it all started.(lagging, freezes, broken pkgs., pkgs. not installing...etc) Well, instead of bitchin' about all of it, I can say, at least, I've learned a lot.

Thanx for the 'heads-up" on Rufus. Ahm...as I checked it out, I had to wonder, "What does Rufus do that the others don't?" Should I need to make another 'bootable" pendrive O.S., I'll definitely give Rufus a try.

You could make another bootable pendrive if you want. If you have one handy that's just collecting dust I'd say go for it.

Not sure what Rufus does that the others don't as I haven't used a Windows system in 6 years.
What I've suggested here with using Rufus is the advise of another Guru I chat with here that's exceptionally good with Windows.;)

Yes, well another bootable pendrive....maybe. If I did, it would be to try AntiX. The MSWin guru...why didn't he mention LiLi?The reason I don't use LiLi is, it won't "load" the iso. I prefer. LiLi uses a set of distros LiLi prefers and when you try to use something other than it's "preferred" distros, it won't load them. Thus, I couldn't get LM18.2-3xfce, Knoppix, nor LM Lite. As long as rufus will allow the distro of MY choice, it's worth a try. LOL LOL I have to say, IF I had another pendrive "lying" around, I'm sure I'd have loaded it with music files, by now. THANX

I ran Anti-X in a VM a few months ago w/o any problems, ran great!
It's great for older machines too.
