Question LiveDVD which is better ext3 or ext4? How do you add mount options?

I've been building liveDVD for family and friends. I recently noticed that if I switch the filesystem from ext4 to ext3 it speeds up the build by about 50-75%. It's painfully slow to run, and I always attributed it to the decompression of the squashed file system. Now I'm starting to wonder.

Which is better for a liveDVD ext3 or ext4? Is there a way to tweak the mount options to turn off journaling and other features? Once the system is built non of this is needed as the image never changes. Is there any other tricks to boost the speed of a liveDVD?

I'd actually say remastering an ISO on an external btrfs drive is MUCH faster than ANY use of other file systems. I in particular have really found btrfs very fast especially on regular drives (but not SSDs; then you use Ext3).
