What distro? DSL and Knoppix can be
installed from the boot option DSL tohd or KNOPPIX tohd
I would try a cheatcode like that at the livecd boot screen, or from the CLI.

"LiveCD's are not meant to be installed on to your hard drive." This is the official answer by the maintainer for Slax, the Slackware-based LiveCD. Vector Linux provides much of the automagic Slax has.

The automagic is actually already in Slackware, you just need to know which commands will do it. For example:
hotplug detects hardware on the kernel level, making it available for use.
xorgsetup detects your video card, mouse, keyboard, and monitor to provide X configuration.
xorgcfg -textmode lets you tweak the detected configuration or do it from scratch easily.
alsaconf detects your sound card and configures it.
localhost:631 in the address bar of a browser takes you to the CUPS web-based administration tool, for adding printers and stuff.
pkgtools will install, remove, upgrade, and view packages.
swaret and slapt-get are third-party applications that downloads and resolves dependencies, as well as call pkgtools to do what it can do.
what Vector does is gather all these automagic programs into a nifty script that takes you to the right program in an easier way.
