Lirc Problems

I am trying to get LIRC to work with my RealMagic remote control so that i can use it will the MythTV suite i have installed.

When i do irrecord i get this:

[mythtv@Arnold lirc-0.6.6]$ irrecord remotes/sigma_designs/lircd.conf.realmagic
irrecord - application for recording IR-codes for usage with lirc
Copyright (C) 1998,1999 Christoph Bartelmus(lirc@bartelmus.de)
irrecord: could not init hardware (lircd running ? --> close it, check permissions)

Any ideas on what the problem is at all?

Thanks

Ok i uninstalled it and am trying again, when i do 'make install' it seems to just stop:

make[1]: Entering directory `/mnt/hdd2/Downloads/Software/lirc/lirc-0.6.6/drivers'
make[2]: Entering directory `/mnt/hdd2/Downloads/Software/lirc/lirc-0.6.6/drivers'
make[3]: Entering directory `/mnt/hdd2/Downloads/Software/lirc/lirc-0.6.6/drivers'
test "/dev/ttyS0" = "" || test -L /dev/lirc || (/bin/sh ../mkinstalldirs /dev && cd `dirname /dev/ttyS0` && cp -p `basename /dev/ttyS0` lirc)

That is all it shows, what is happening here?

Thanks

firstly i am no expert so i don't know if i will be much help.
secondly you might find it easier to use the precompiled packages and install them with yum or apt. from what you've posted you are using a serial ir receiver. to use one you need the packages lirc-lib, lirc and lirc-kmdl-[kernel version goes in here]. The last one is the kernel module and is specific to the kernel you are using. Once those are installed you need to run modprobe and this should get you up to the point that irrecord will work.
e.g for me using yum and fedora core 4 kernel 2.6.13
yum install lirc
yum install lirc-kmdl-2.6.13*
modprobe lirc_serial
irrecord lircd.conf
then to check it works
chkconfig lircd on
service lircd start
irw
then you start pressing buttons and see what comes up in the terminal window

if you hav to compile lirc yourself after compiling you need to run
insmod lirc_serial
from the compile directory.

hope i was even remotely helpful
