LIRC on my laptop
Howdy Linux Gurus,
I have Kubuntu running on my laptop, everything works, and I now want to make good use of my IrDA port. I had the idea that I can control applications such as Kaffeine (the only media player I plan to use) throgh a remote control. I don't have a TV tuner card or anything like that, I just want it to control kaffeine. I installed LIRC and KDELIRC through synaptic from the universe repositories, but my IRKick (the KDE LIRC server) tells me that I don't have any emote controls set up. I copied and pasted a random remote control config I found on the internet into lirc.conf, but to no avail. IRKick tells me that no remote controls are available.
For the actual remote control, I plan to use my Palm Pilot, which can act as universal remote (I can set it to pretty much any remote in the world from preprogrammed libraries, plus, I can train it through its own IrDA port). The only things is, it transmits singals a TV could understand, so would the be compatible with my IrDA port? I'm using NoviiRemote software, but I can switch that at any moment to something that will actually work.
Please tell me if my idea is even possible, and if so, what I'm doing wrong. All the tutorials I came upon require recompiling the kernel, and are for MythTV.
Thanks!
