Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. Do you want to run an instant messaging server that Linux and Windows clients can access or just an instant messaging client that has Windows and Linux versions.
I run a Jabber 2 instant messaging server here and my users have mostly gaim and psi as clients. Both gaim and psi have Linux and Windows versions.

It works well here - we're using keys/certs that I generated locally to encrypt conversations between the clients and the jabber server and file transfers also work properly.

I'm using Jabber2 because it was an easy change from an older Jabber 1 server. Wildfire seems to have a larger feature set according to http://www.jabber.org/admin/jsc/ and I've seen people here recommending it so you shouldn't have any problems with it.

I haven't checked the Wildfire install yet, but to cut down on your Java install time...
Download jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin (or whatever version it's up to now) from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp;
Copy it to the parent of the location you want it installed in, e.g. /usr/local (the reason for this is the modification that installing makes to /etc/mailcap includes the path to the install location);
Make it executable with chmod 0750 /usr/local/jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin;
Run it with cd /usr/local && ./jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin;
I usually create a link called /usr/local/jdk that points to the install location as well as adding the following to my users' profiles:
Code:
export JAVA_HOME="/usr/local/jdk"
export PATH="$PATH:${JAVA_HOME}/bin"

Yep - putting them in /etc/profile will make them available to all your users.
