Linux Window Managers
 

Anyone recommend a really good window manager?

You have to be a little more specific. Like what are looking for, fast, vast or with loads of features or..??

I'm really getting to like enlightenment.

I either use that or KDE. It is al relative to your needs and preferences though.

Check out FLUXBOX. If you do decide to get it, get .91, its plenty stable and MUCH MUCH better.

Where'd you get .91 from? CVS? :)

Latest listed stable is still 0.1.14...

Well, to be specific, I just want something simple, without comprimising a lot of features. Also something editable, like where you can edit the menus and such?

You really can't have both. I have tried blackbox, hackedbox,(fast and light) gnome and KDE (bloated and plodding). If you go simplistic you loose features, If you go featureful you lose speed. And, they are all configureable to a degree.

Although to be fair I have not tried Fluxbox. or Icewm or probably a bunch of others I don't have the inclination to play with. Good Luck.

Check out the complimentary apps that they also show on their front page. They allow you to easily customize FB, w/o editing any config files. Also, they allow you to have Desktop Icons, Program Docks, lots of other cool features.

hmmm. fluxbox. Why do I read these forums I have so little time as it is and yet I find out things I don't need and don't have time for yet I am drawn into them ...DAMN YOU CONSTRASURTA, DAMN YOU! :)

Have you tried running the Screensaver in the root Window (wallpaper)? If you run Flurry or something like that, its sooo cool. I like that kind of stuff though. Just type:

/usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/(screensavername) -root

Thats one nice thing about a light WM.

I'm a big KDE fan, dunno why, guess its just what i "grew up" on lol. It does what I need so I'm happy.

I've been using icewm for the past several days and marveling at how much I enjoy it. Before that, I was using blackbox and would gladly use blackbox anyday, especially with bbkeys for keyboard support. But I find icewm to have more features (such as built-in pager and taskbar--none of which you have to use, though) and easier to configure (very straightforward, with or without a helper configuration utility). Icewm runs every bit as fast as blackbox on my system. I've also tried Window Maker but couldn't get it to work right (unable to edit themes, for example) and find it a bit overloaded on "features" to suit me. But Window Maker is also very fast.

I like speed, unobtrusiveness, user-friendliness, and a stylish but not overdone look, and icewm and blackbox have suited me best so far. I was so relieved to get away from the Gnome and KDE desktops that I thought obligatory when I first changed to Linux! For my taste, they were even worse than the look and feel of Windows. Now I have something that zooms and sizzles instead of creeping and dazzling.

Need to try fluxbox one of these days, to judge from the enthusiasm shown for it in these posts.
