Cool Linux System Calls or Interupts

Hi All
I am new to this Forum world but I hope I 'll get use to it pretty soon.
I am working on a project that requires USB drives,I have to write the code in C,but I don't know wat are the system calls or interupts that are used in Linux to tell the Kernel that a new hardware(USB) is attached, I know we have to mount the device before using it.
But the problem is that how come I know that a device is attached to my BOX and how to implement this feature in programing.
If anyone knows please let me know as I have to start writing the code in a day or two.
Thanx all for taking ur time off and reading my POST.
