that's really not possible. there are literally thousands of versions of what you would call "Linux" - i.e. software distributions. just look for yourself at a site like distrowatch.com pages and pages and pages of them.

Far to many versions of Linux distros out there, if you want info on most of them then visit:

Many of them are alike, especially those that are based on the same "mother" distribution, but there may be big-ish differences between such distributions too. For a quick start I recommend you find out (by reading like mentioned above, maybe trying, ...) the major differences between RedHat, Debian and Slackware. That's a start -- many of the other major distributions are based on those, and resemble them in some ways.

It won't give you a perfect picture of how things are, but a starting point. Pay attention to package management, system/service configuration (how it's managed) and such. Don't pay too much attention to desktop outlooks, because they can always be tweaked to look like something else..most of them use either KDE, Gnome or XFCE, and offer (of course) a wide variety of other, smaller window managers or desktops. The real differences are "under the hood", how the system and it's changes are organized.
