Linux software questions
I just installed Mandrake 9.1 and am trying to install a bunch of different software on the system. I am not sure if I have perl already on the system or not. There are perl libraries, but when I try to install another piece of software it tries to find a perl header file (perl.h) , which it can't. I don't know why it is not there.
I also need to find out if I have a C++ compiler installed on the system. How would I go about doing this? If I don't have it, how do I go about downloading it and installing it?
I also am trying to install gd, a graphics library. I downloaded it and extracted it in my tmp file on my home directory. How do I install, and in what directory should it go?

i guess you could try to use any one of these commands to see if perl is installed.

whereis perl
which perl
locate perl

on my system, whereis perl and which perl will output /usr/bin/perl which is where the perl program is at. my guess is though that perl.h file is a c/c++ file, in which case, when you installed mandy, did you choose to install the development packages? i'm not sure on how mandy's install is since i don't use it, but i know in redhat's install, you can make a choice of the different packages you want installed, one of which being the development packages needed for compiling programs/source code. if you didn't, try finding the packages on your mandy install cds.
