Linux software equivalents to...
 

hi, I'm hoping to switch from windows to the Mandrake 10 distro of linux the only thing holding me back now are finding the right tools and of course working out how to run the whole caboodle which i have spent some time doing and finding the appropriate progs etc. But a few thing i'd like to find are equivalents/ports to my windows progs, so without further adoo:

Virtualdub all-in-one version (video encoder) -

Msn messenger "with voice and webcam" -

Synchronisation with mobile phones (currentlly siemens s55) -

Nero 6.0 and Alcohol 120% (dvd burning/backing up) -

Wmv and quicktime formats (inc streaming) -

Emule and kazaa -

tv Capture software (vdub does this also) -

AVG virus scanner -

Sygate personal firewall -

dvd player -

"dvd shrink" dvd ripper -

cd ripper/wma encoder (and other formats) -

bloody hell all that makes me look like a cyber pirate! (yes i know that sounded too cheesy for my own good)

2 general questions;

where is the equivalent "program files" folder -

(mozilla/konqueror) is it possible to use the back and forward buttons on my mouse! -

not sure what you mean, but maybe just get quicktime and mplayer plugin
for your browser if thats what your referring to ..

equivalent to program files, well i guess my guess would be /usr/bin .. who knows ...
its a pretty irrelevant equivalent (and knowledge) if you ask me

as of your mouse, well yes you can setup your mouse to do it, but by
default no it will not .... might be some tips here

giFT is a good substitute for eMule and Kazaa (in fact I think there's an eDonkey, or LDonkey for emule). Get the fasttrack plugin (not the openft one).

Burn CDs/DVDs with xcdroast (which is a frontend for cdrecord).

You don't need a virus scanner unless you're going to be passing files downloaded in linux onto windows.

Program Files? God I never used that directory even when I used windows! In any case, you'll probably install most software in either /usr or /usr/local..occasionally /opt (particularly for kde). The choice is yours...

mplayer will play dvds, video cds, mpeg, avi...pretty much anything!

I'll answer the ones that I know:

Msn messenger "with voice and webcam" - GNOMEMEETING (amount of compatibility unknown)

Emule and kazaa - KAZAA LINUX VERSION (a web search reveals that there is one... I couldn't tell you if it's true)

tv Capture software (vdub does this also) - MENCODER

AVG virus scanner - NOT NEEDED (about 12 viruses in the wild for Linux, and you need to intentionally run those) or SOPHOS ANTIVIRUS, INTERSCAN VIRUSWALL, F-SECURE ANTI-VIRUS, AVP

Sygate personal firewall - BASTILLE LINUX (inlcuded in like 100% of all distros, most distros will default firewalls to on, with security set for ordinary desktop use), plus a few GUI type ones like MASON

dvd player - MPLAYER (download the full version off the web as you need the appropriate DVD decoder libraries, not included on most distros, but of probably legal status due to the "fair use doctrine" )

"dvd shrink" dvd ripper - DON'T KNOW DON'T RIP DVDs

cd ripper/wma encoder (and other formats) - KAUDIOCREATOR / FFMPEG

2 general questions;

There is no kazaa linux version...there was briefly but it was command line and not terribly good.

/etc is NOT like program files, it doesn't contain executables, only text configuration files (well, generally)

just because you have these partitions doesn't mean others do ;)

I love my dvdripping program, dvd::rip

mplayer is a great movie player (and supports every known file type) but xine is better for n00bs like you because xine is MUCH more user-friendly :) Xine is also a great DVD player.

Especially for n00bs, MDK gives you much of this software already (the crappy KDE versions). So this shouldn't be so difficult to find anything you want (also because MDK is very verbose and tells you what EVERY package is practically).

When correctly configured, you CAN use mozilla and do the back/forward buttons with your mouse. I am sure, again, there is a n00b guide out there for you.

LinuxTV is a good TV-recording/capturing and TV-Watching program. The virtual menus are what make it shine.

DrOzz: Are you like some sort of god? I have been looking for Kazaa-Linux EVERYWHERE! Thanks a ton!

You couldn't have looked very hard. Googling found it for me...but I wouldn't bother with it, it sucks noodles. Give giFT a go..you can connect to FastTrack (the kazaa network) and it's much much better.

giFT, preferably with giFTcurs frontend. :)

Clamav I suppose. Nothing wrong with a virus scanner in Linux, you can never be too careful.

Shorewall

Grip's my favorite graphical ripper/encoder.

Typically, programs will install into directories under /usr, or /usr/local.

I've been told it is, but I've never been able to get it to work. Search the forums for it.

search for 'ayttm' on sourceforge.net
It says it can support your webcam on both Yahoo! and MSN. I tried it but it did not work...you can give it a try as well

The Linux equivalents of Adobe Pagemaker (Scribus & Passepartout) are too early in their development to be relied on.
