Linux software and security

I have decided to started using Mandrake Linux on my dual-boot laptop (w/ win xp) for email, (kontact) and some online multi-player games that I frequently play (Enemy Territory and TC: Elite).

My main reason for doing so is becuase the price and security of Windows XP applications.

I am tired of the fact that I dont know how many apps communicate information via the internet
to software publishers and what information is transmitted.

My main question about Mandrake linux or any linux is how secure is it?

1) Should I install a firewall, antivirus and or other security apps?
2) is there a app where I can monitor internet connections similar to Norton Internet Security?

Thanks in advance for any answers, advice or recommendations.

PS. I am a complete linux newbie, but I have significant experience with XP.

Some distro's come with a built in firewall to regulate transfer via the net. As of now i dont seem much use for a anti-virus software. Windows has about 50,000 viruses. LInux has about 10 that i know of. So i wouldnt worry about an anti-virus software. Almost all viruses that attack your computer are designed for windows and wouldnt affect a linux system in teh first place. So as an answer to ur questino dont worry about anti-virus. To see if you have a firewall installed go to kmenu if your running KDE and look under system. Most distros have an explananation of what teh program does right next the program label in kmenu

[...]

as you like.
reacting to new known vulnerabilities,
setting up a firewall,
using strong passwords,
not running unnecessary/weak services
*and* to know your os.

all these will improve system security.

read some basics at www.tldp.org . security often is distribution specific - so have a look how mandrake handles this (there is current documentation from mandrake for sure).

some things may allready be activated, others may need closer configuration or installation to work the way you like.

sl mritch.
