Smile linux server

I recently installed Red hat enterprise 5 on a vmware esx server 4 and i didnt realize that for updates and patches you have to have a subscription to the red hat network. is there a free server linux OS that does not require this and is there a way to update on RHEL 5 without a subscription.

There certainly is. CentOS is built from RHEL sources (made publicly available by Red Hat under the GPL), and they have a how-to doc that explains how you can use CentOS repositories with a RHEL machine.

Basically you can't have RH unless you have it legally and then you'd have support. So, I'd say reload it with Centos or Scientific linux or for that matter almost any of the "from sources" ones like white glove or other.

Most disto's offer a server version too.

Sorry, but I dispute that. Red Hat do not sell Linux. They sell a support service. If you don't want their support you don't have to buy it. Any one is allowed and able to download RHEL with a trial 30-day support/update subscription. RHEL is free - Red Hat's support is not.
