Linux RH 4.5 panic question

This is my first post here but am hoping this is a simple problem. Know Solaris and HP-UX but first try with Linux. We are installing with ks.cfg that was probably mis-edited to "trim it down".

The install goes fine, all CDs in, but when it boots we get:

<0>kernel panic - not syncing: Oops

And nothing after that. Have googled looking for ideas. that is how I found you guys.

Any ideas?

Added acpi=off to bootloader line - now root can't login

We added acpi=off to the bootloader line
bootloader --location=mbr --append="rhgb quiet acpi=off"

and it boots up fine.

Now, we can't login as root. We get "root logins are not allowed"

We took this down to bare metal and are trying to rebuild. In other OSs, there is a "Enter root's password" prompt during the install. So root login is permitted until users can be added and root login is turned off when security is setup.

What is the effect of selinux --enforcing?

kernel, panic, rh
