Linux ports randomly closing?
 

I've got a Microtel box with Debian Linux that I use to back up my other computers to. I've been having a lot of trouble with backups failing after moving less than 1.5gb.

At first I thought that the problem was with the ftp server. Changing that out to proftp made no difference. Next I thought that perhaps it is a network problem but I can ping the target machine, just not connect to it.

After a while I noticed that when the I was unable to connect via ftp at the same time I couldn't get into the machine with ssh. Eventually I got to the stage where using a port monitor I determined that for some reason the lower numbered ports would shut down on the target machine, then after a while for no apparent reason they would open back up.

Along the way I've upgraded the version of Linux I'm using to "testing" so at least I'm not using the same version all along.

I don't really know what to do next so I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any ideas what the problem might be and how I can go about fixing it.

I think I may have found the problem. My wireless router had the same ip address as the Linux box. Now how do I delete this message?
