Linux PDC -- Help choosing best distro or software

Hi,
I am a bit confused about this, so please be as helpful as you can be.
Just to start a little background on my situation:
I work at a vocational school in Portugal. We have 20 workstations running xp pro without any PDC control. I have innstalled Censornet proxy in the network. It proxys all the outside network traffic, and also does DHCP.
Now.. I want to install a Linux box to work as a PDC. I tried a how-to found in the how-to forge site, and I must say I managed to get it working with Ubuntu breezy, still it lacks somethings like centralized web administration,..etc.
The main thing is that I want a Linux Distro that that is more samba/cifs "friendly", with capabilities to do PDC, roaming profiles, shares,users/groups (in bulk), etc...
I tried SME server at www.contribs.org, and although it seems to be just what I want I found the forums to be very unhelpful for the begginer, and the distro does lots of things that I am not interested since I am already running Censornet.
So... here I am...
Can you guys point me a distro that serves my purposes?? manly like SME or aproached...to that...
Thanks for your time.

i dont think it matters to much which distro you use. The software is written by the samba team and not the distro makers. so samba is "much of a muchness" accross all linux's and unix's. Some might be more tricky because of extra security, but other than that's it's pretty much the same.

however, samba do provide their own gui tool called "swat" and there are several others that you might investigate. also i believe and electronic copy of the o'reilly samba book is actually included in the samba software....

i dont think you are going wrong with Ubuntu, it's well surported and has a large community. You just need to learn more about samba i'm afraid. and it's a fairly complex area.....

have you seen this:

Yes, thanks...
The thing is .. I have almost everything working with ubuntu, including the roaming profiles, quotas, etc, still right now I am facing a weird message when a user logs in.
I customized my netlogon.bat to run a proxy.reg that enables the browser to use the censornet proxy. Everything fine, but when the same user opens a new session again I get an a console error in Windows rundll.....bblaá... blaáaaa. ...and about the roaming profiles, for instances the change background thing, even though it is marked in the users profile to assume a walpaper, when you switch machines they do not change .. So,... I really need something else to test these things, and i am looking on SME server, but I am facing serious doubts:
1)Since I am behind Censornet proxy, how do I tell SME box to use and auth in Censornet machine?
2)They have a RPM called something.... lazy-admin-tools that enable adding users, groups, etc in bulk... but it is too outdated..
3)Apart from that... people at the forums seem to be elitist....

Oh well... i guess i Will just stay with Ubuntu...
